GREAT-PARK 100

The Great Park Synagogue, Johannesburg, is celebrating the centenary of the Shul since the founding of the Wolmerans Street Shul in 1913. In honour of this important milestone, a beautiful Coffee Table Book has been written by David Saks and published by Geoff Wald.

The book traces the history of Jewish Johannesburg over the past century. It reaches back to the opening of the very first Synagogue in Johannesburg (Shaar Hashamayim) on President Street, in 1888. The foundation stone of that Synagogue has been included in the new Synagogue on Glenhove Road in Houghton. The book’s well written history, and its magnificent illustrations capture the Synagogue’s heyday, it’s near demise and its flourishing rebirth in the new Great Park Shul which houses its treasures of old.

A limited edition of 1000 copies of “Great Park Synagogue 1887 -2013: A History” have been printed – each numbered and signed. The price is R1500 plus shipping and all proceeds will be directed to charity.
